Character of God

The character of God typically becomes a topic of culture’s conversation during provocative or “suffering” news events.  The Christian community will voice opinions of who we think God is and who He is not.  Then, others who acknowledge His existence present other ideas sourced deep within their own realities. All viewpoints centered on the why; why would would a loving God permit such to occur?

Who is God?

Consider these statements:

  • The Word of God shapes all life.
  • The lack of the Word of God shapes all life.

What’s your perspective?

Using YouVersion’s app to stay on task to complete my annual read through the Bible, my personal goal in this daily commitment is to seek a clearer perspective of God’s character.  I desire to know the truth of His character revealed within the text of the Scripture, from God’s spoken Word and from the words of those who experienced His glory first hand in the Bible.

This layman’s journal of mine will become, in essence, a collection of scriptures, quotes, and very brief commentary from the intentionally pursuit; and that through His Word, my life will be shaped.

Character of God: Creator

God the Father & Spirit of God are present during creation.

Genesis 1:1-3
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light.”

Genesis begins with a majestic description of God our Creator.  From His spoken words, “Let there be”, the life we know became a reality.  The implications of His power and wisdom are woven tightly within the verses of Genesis 1, and they present such a majestic and sovereign Creator of all things.

Character of God_Hand of God

With some interest in astronomy, I am still fascinated by  NASA’s images of a massive stellar formation that resembles a human hand.

The magnitude of this striking “Hand of God” image spans 150 light years and is a beautiful display caused by a young, powerful pulsar that was created from a collapsed star.  Considering the perspective that the distance from our earth to sun is about 8 light minutes, I am awestruck by this magnificent snapshot of God’s creation.

Psalm 8:9
“O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!”

Psalm 104:1
“Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord my God, You are very great; You are clothed with splendor and majesty,”

Jesus is present at Creation

Colossians 1:15-17
“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.

Character of God:  Eternal, everlasting

Psalm 90:2
“Before the mountains were born or You gave birth to the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.”

Psalm 12:6-7
“The words of the Lord are pure words; as silver tried in a furnace on the earth, refined seven times. You, O Lord, will keep them; You will preserve him from this generation forever.”

God is God, and There is No Other

Isaiah 45:18
“For thus says the Lord, who created the heavens; He is the God who formed the earth and made it, He established it and did not create it a waste place, ‘Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth;'”

Isaiah 45:21
“Declare and set forth your case; Indeed, let them consult together. Who has announced this from of old Who has long since declared it? Is it not I, the Lord? And there is no other God besides Me, A righteous God and a Savior; There is none except Me.”

Isaiah 45:22
“Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth; For I am God, and there is no other.”

My Submission

Isaiah 45:23
“I have sworn by Myself, The word has gone forth from My mouth in righteousness And will not turn back, That to Me every knee will bow, every tongue will swear allegiance.”

Psalm 104:34
“Let my meditation be pleasing to Him; as for me, I shall be glad in the Lord.”
